The Origins of a Legacy

The Origins of a Legacy

Phil Croff’s journey into boatbuilding began with his love for fly fishing. In 1994, at around 25 years old, he and a friend spent their nights wading through the small streams of Northern Michigan in search of elusive brown trout. But as the hours wore on, the physical toll of night fishing became clear. One early morning at 4 a.m., exhausted and frustrated, Phil had an epiphany: there had to be a better way.“It got old, and it got old fast,” Phil recalls. He realized that to fish the waters he wanted, deep in the woods where few ventured, he needed something better than wading on foot. He needed a boat.

Innovation Through Experience

Innovation Through Experience

After rowing various boats, Phil found them all lacking—too tipsy, too heavy, or too big for the narrow, shallow waters he loved. Drawing on his construction background, he set out to create a drift boat tailored precisely to his needs. It had to be lightweight yet sturdy, capable of navigating mere inches of water without sacrificing stability.“I needed a boat that, if I had to get through four inches of water on the flat, I wanted to be able to do that,” Phil explains.

A five star beauty on water

Life not as fun as you think it should be. Is it lacking in excitement, adventure and freedom. Do you wish that maybe once in a while someone looked at you twice. I have just the prescription for you. Get yourself a Croft Craft drift boat. You don’t need Tony Robbin’s you need Phil Croft. Not only will Phil build your dream boat he will also be a life long friend and let me tell you everyone could use a little more salt of the earth like Phil. He knows for example that one size does not fit all and he is all too eager to build exactly the boat that suits your needs. Thats what he did for me and my life has never been the same. Not only do I have the most beautiful boat east of the sierra but it’s one of a kind. You see the rivers in my home state of Idaho can run a little swifter and a bit rougher and sometimes it’s takes days between put in and take out so with this in mind Phil, the genius that he is built me something with higher gunwales and room for gear to support multiple days. All this in a boat that weighs less than 400 Lbs and drafts just under four inches, just brilliant! And he did all this purely through stream of consciousness. No plans just pure artistry and master craftsmanship. Each one of his boats is a masterpiece just look for yourselves. Every time I see one of his creations I get jealous until I see my boat and then I feel like I’m a member of a very exclusive and sexy club.
Get yourself a Croft Craft I promise you won’t be sorry, that is unless the unwanted attention from everyone saying “That’s a beautiful boat how can I get one?” Gets on your nerves. I got to say though it’s a better chick magnet than a golden retriever puppy and that’s a good thing.

When functionality meets high end artistry

I'm a long-time fishing client of Phil's and have always loved riding down the narrow and scenic rivers of Northern Michigan in style. For me, there's nothing I like more than tricking a mature brown trout in the comfort of a cedar and carbon drifter. The first time Phil let me row his boat, it only took about 2 strong oar strokes for me to stall the boat to a complete stop. Immediately, I realized that this boat was much more than art. From drafting less water than the raft I previously owned, to the maneuverability in shallow gravel bars, this boat could do everything and more than any other river boat I had been in while still providing a high-end comfortable experience. That's when I knew that I needed one for myself. Phil not only built and customized a Croff Craft drifter to my style and liking, but he also customized it for the water that I would be fishing. Look no further, this boat is the end-game of all drifters. I feel as though mine is a functional piece of art that is a part of my family and will eventually be passed down. The extremes of being able to push the boat down hills with its tough bottom liner to fish a creek that's hard to raft through, to sitting out as a piece of art at my wedding, this boat has exceeded my expectations and provided myself, my family and my friends with a truly unique lens to fish Michigan streams through. I can't recommend the product and Phil enough. If you're unsure about inquiring, don't be. At the very least, you'll enjoy a conversation with one of the most creative, innovative and fishy guys in the industry. 10/10 Drifter, thank you Phil!!!

Best Drift Boat on Market!

I’ve been fly fishing with Phil out of his Croff Craft boats for 15 years. Hands down the best drift boat I’ve ever fished out of. His attention to detail is unreal and not only is it the prettiest boat on any river it is even more functional than most other drift boats. It’s light, easy to launch and load. The way this boat drafts and rolls over super skinny water is unreal. At times we’d smirk seeing guys having to get out and walk boats over bars in rivers while we’d slide right over with ease. I love how Phil’s boats and I’ve fished out of many he’s built over the 15 years are so stable! Shifting body weight or reaching to make a tight cast or just moving around with 3 guys and a dog in the boat never felt so stable. It’s a feeling of “dang….i can’t even rock this boat!.” I actually feel spoiled fishing out of a Croff Craft cause I’ve been in others before and after and it’s night and day! It’s worth every penny and Phil is a man of his word. He’s building these boats, nobody else, not mass production and he stands behind his craftsmanship. Even if something needs to be tweaked or changed, Phill will happily do it. Many hours mousing all through the night we’ve discussed boat modifications or “what if we did this? Or make it this length with this draft? Etc etc?” Phil is always testing the boundaries of building something nobody would think of and it works!! Bottom line, if you want a true drift boat that’s custom to your fishing needs then I would reach out to Phil, meet with him, explain what your’re looking for and he’ll build it. Not only will these boats fishing exactly the want you want….they will do it for your lifetime with how tough they are. A good heirloom to hand down as well.

Amazing craftsmanship

I’ve floated on multiple variations of Phil’s boats. They are sturdy, roomy and lightweight. The attention to detail is like non other. I highly recommend.
