Allen Crater is an outdoor writer, editor, and conservationist whose award-winning essays reflect his deep passion for hunting, fishing, and the natural world.
Allen is a devoted husband and father whose grown sons now regularly out hunt, hike, and fish him—something he wears as a badge of honor. A passionate advocate for conservation and public lands, he co-founded and co-chaired the Michigan Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers and now serves as Vice President of Pere Marquette Trout Unlimited.
An accomplished writer, Allen is Editor at Large and a regular contributor to Strung Sporting Journal and writes a quarterly feature for Michigan Out-of-Doors Magazine. His work has also appeared in Gray’s Sporting Journal, Fly Fisher, Fly Fusion, Upland Almanac, the Tom Beckbe Field Journal, Solace, and Backcountry Journal. He is a proud member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers, and the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association.
Allen’s latest book, For Everything There is a Season, is the follow-up to his award-winning debut, Outside in Shorts, a celebrated collection of 29 sporting essays. Through his writing, Allen captures the beauty of the outdoors and the deep connections we forge in wild places. His work is a reflection of a life well-lived in the field, stream, and woods.
