About the Image

Years ago I came to the conclusion that I derive more personal satisfaction from painting an,“everyman’s - everyday fish”, than rendering a once in a lifetime trophy. This small brown trout was caught in the little Midwestern stream I fish, and I found the image compelling enough to paint. I liked the reflective quality of the water and the wet fish, and the stained-glass effect of the net over the sunlit bottom. When I look at it, I can feel the slight weight of the fish as it’s balanced lovingly in the angler’s hand. I also enjoy the slight tension between the angler and the fish, which looks longingly at the watery world where it belongs, and to which it will soon be returned.
