Rendering a fish, in paint or pencil, is an overwhelming endeavor; it’s exhausting.

How far do you push the myriad detail… how does one render such intricacy and still remain painterly?

It’s a difficult balance, but one that’s becomes easier since I’ve recognized the tyranny of detail and have slipped its bonds by learning to paint the allusion of detail.

If you look closely at the image, what appears to be highly rendered detail dissolves into blobs of color and brushwork.
