About the Image

It was late in the afternoon on the last day of a perfect week in Alaska. The Agulukpak River ran low and clear, there’d been a steady hatch of mayflies, and the fish had responded accordingly. The fisherman I guided caught one of his nicest fish on his last cast, and upon landing it, he asked me to hold it for a brief moment to capture it with a photograph.

"Something to remember this marvelous day by," he said as the sound of a landing floatplane caught our attention and called us to the lake above for our ride back to the lodge.

Twenty years had passed since that summer, and the day found me in my studio. Having just finished a painting, I was enjoying the wonderful dilemma of deciding what to paint next.

I thought to clear my head with walk down to the post office in our small rural village. It was there I found a letter that answered my question.

My friend, from two decades past, had sent me a copy of the photograph he’d taken that day on the river. He wrote that the rainbow he’d landed that day had haunted him, and he wondered if I’d care to paint it.

I was thrilled to do so, although it was a bit odd to paint something as familiar as my own hands. The painting now hangs in his office to remind him of the river, the day, and one special fish.
