About the Image

Nothing is as nourishing to the soul as spending time on one’s‘home water’. Knowing a river intimately, in all of its moods through every season, is like a treasured friendship. And, like the best of relationships, even after years of time together, there are still surprises to be had, and countless lessons to be learned.

This painting was created to illustrate my 100th collaboration with John Gierach in Fly Rod & Reel magazine.

After Lee Wulff’s tragic death in 1991, the editors at Fly Rod & Reel asked John to write the closing column, and I was asked to illustrate it.

Our first regular column together,“The Sporting Life”, was published in March of 1992. We celebrated our 100th column together in the July/October 2008 issue. The illustration for the 100th column,“Close to Home” is a painting of John fishing his home water in Colorado.

Our last column for Fly Rod & Reel was in the summer of 2017. Since then the column has been renamed, and in the fall of 2017,“Convergence“ became a regular feature in TROUT magazine.
