About Smokin’ Trout Fly Co.
Ethan and his wife began Smokin’ Trout Fly Co. in February 2020 - right after they got married. Ethan was introduced to fly fishing at age 12, and he has been passionate about it ever since. After spending time with several world class fly fishing guides in 2016, Ethan began his tying career. Receiving insight from several mentors was a key part in Ethan creating his own patterns and deciding to guide on local NC rivers. He realized his love for entomology and all of the challenges that wild trout provide, so he has poured those passions into teaching others.
Since 2020, Ethan has been guiding professionally and has mastered the tying of various types of bugs. Guiding on western NC water has allowed him to focus on developing effective, natural patterns that put fish in clients’ hands. Each fly is hand-tied, ethically sourced, and fished throughout the country. Ethan has personally tested each fly on the water and altered every design for peak performance. No matter the season, weather, or river, there will be a bug for you in this mix.
Smokin’ Trout Fly Co.’s number one goal is to provide customers with unique, durable, and effective patterns that provide the most successful fishing experience possible. Connecting people with the waters they fish and a deeper understanding of entomology, trout, and how to better protect our natural spaces is our calling. We are more than just a fly company - we are making a difference in how people see fly fishing one bug at a time.
All flies are hand-tied and shipped within 3-5 days
PATTERNS
Carrot Top Caddis
The hot-spot caddis larva dubbed with a spikey squirrel hair dubbing provides lifelike movement as it drifts through the water. An excellent pattern for early Spring and Fall mornings, this fly is deadly during the early stages of caddis hatches. The iridescence of the green tinsel creates the translucent look of young caddis larvae that are hatching. The dubbing collar represents the shuck or shell that the caddis is emerging from. This style is tied on a competition-grade, jig-style hook with a slotted tungsten bead, which inverts the hook while underwater.
Available in sizes 16 and 18. Sold in packs of 3.
Materials:
- Bead head - 98% tungsten 2.8mm bead
- Hook - Firehole model 516 barbless jig hook
- Dubbing - squirrel hair
- Body - green tinsel
- Thread - Semperfli 8/0 brown
- UV glue - Loon UV resin
- Tail - light brown Coq de Leon
Yuba Pupa
The Yuba Pupa, originally designed by Hogan Brown, is deadly when fished on a dead or swing drift like a soft hackle. Because it is an emerger stage fly pattern, it is very effective at the beginning though mid- stages of a hatch. However, you can fish it right though a hatch as a dropper. The flashback hare’s ear body is enough to catch fish alone, but there is so much more to this fly. It sports two boit wings with crystal in between followed by a shroud of dubbing and a peacock collar, finished off with a coffee-colored bead. This top-producer has become my absolute favorite emerger! I have had multiple days catching over 40 fish simply because of this bug.
Available in sizes 16 and 18. Sold in packs of 3.
Materials:
- Bead Head - 98% tungsten 3mm bead
- Hook - Firehole model 516 barbless jig
- Ribs - Copper wire
- Thread - Semperfli 8/0 brown
- Body - Wisps natural rabbit dubbing
- Collar - Peacock
RJ PT
Looking for more than just another pheasant tail nymph? The RJ Pt is your dream come true. Fishing with a guide in CO a few years ago, I was introduced to beaded body flies with their incredible bugginess and ability to bring fish to hand. Since that trip, I have been working on designs that incorporate the effectiveness of this style. This pattern is deadly as a small stone fly or dark mayfly. The RJ PT is my new favorite and among my confidence flies. Having a few of these bugs with you ensures you have an answer when trout are wary of the normal PT nymphs or are just looking for something different. This is a top- producer when guiding, and I am sure it will be huge part of your success going forward.
Available in sizes 14 and 16. Sold in packs of 3.
Materials:
- Hook - 317 Firehole hook size 14-16
- Bead - 3 mm black nickel
- Body - black glass beads
- Tail - black pheasant tail
- Wing Case - black pheasant tail
The Green Machine
The Green Machine Dark olive, a cream collar, and a little flash. How can you make that any better? We did. We kept the natural curve of a traditional hook and added an inverting bead so you land more fish and fewer rocks. This fly has solved a massive problem for me, and I hope it does the same for you. I like the curved body on my midge patterns, yet as a Euro Nympher at heart, I am always looking for a more efficient pattern. The Green Machine got its name for a reason. The inverting bead keeps your fly from snagging by flipping the hook point up away from the bottom of the river. A simple solution to a problem of the past. This pattern is fantastic during BWO hatches or during the cold months when trout are keying onto smaller patterns.
Available in sizes 18 and 20. Sold in packs of 3.
Materials:
- Hook - 316 Firehole hook size 18-20
- Body - olive thread
- Head - flash
- Collar - cream thread
Perfect Caddis
Finally! A caddis larva that looks like a caddis. It is particularly useful when spooky trout need something a little more convincing. Matching the hatch is easy for this fly. It is detailed and almost lifelike. This fly has proven its worth on many a spring morning. A must-have for caddis-laden rivers.
Available in sizes 16 and 18. Sold in packs of 3.
Materials:
- Hook - Firehole Model 315
- Thread - Semperfli 8/0 Black
- Legs - Peacock
